                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Acknowledging the contributions of senior Georgians; 
  1- 2  observing the week of January 24-28, 2000, as Senior Week at 
  1- 3  the Capitol; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 4  WHEREAS, the State of Georgia has the fifth fastest growing 
  1- 5  65 plus population in the United States; and 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, senior Georgians are the state's fastest growing 
  1- 7  resource, contributing immeasurably to Georgia's vitality; 
  1- 8  and 
 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, the General Assembly of Georgia benefits from 
  1-10  hearing the opinions of senior Georgians about the concerns 
  1-11  and needs of this growing segment of the population; and 
 
  1-12  WHEREAS, senior Georgians need to understand our state's 
  1-13  legislative process and become meaningfully involved in it 
  1-14  in order to influence state policy and improve the future of 
  1-15  all Georgians; and 
 
  1-16  WHEREAS, the Georgia Council on Aging was created in 1977 by 
  1-17  an Act of the General Assembly to advise the state, 
  1-18  including the General Assembly, on matters of concern to 
  1-19  senior Georgians; and 
 
  1-20  WHEREAS, since 1987, the Georgia Council on Aging has 
  1-21  coordinated an annual assembly of senior Georgians to 
  1-22  participate in special activities, known as Senior Week at 
  1-23  the Capitol, in an effort to recognize the contributions of 
  1-24  seniors and to increase public awareness of their needs. 
 
  1-25  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the week 
  1-26  of January 24-28, 2000, shall be observed as Senior Week at 
  1-27  the Capitol, and all members of this body are encouraged to 
  1-28  respond to issues of importance to senior Georgians. 
 
  1-29  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  1-30  authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of 
  1-31  this resolution to the Georgia Council on Aging.
