A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing Tuesday, January 26, 1999, as "Effingham County
1- 2 Day"; and for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Effingham County, located just 20 miles northwest
1- 4 of historic Savannah and bordering the Savannah River,
1- 5 offers old South genteel living combined with proximity to
1- 6 the many attractions of Savannah; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, the county, which is made up of three incorporated
1- 8 communities, Rincon, Springfield, and Guyton, and several
1- 9 smaller communities, such as Meldrim, Faulkville, Pineora,
1-10 Stillwell, Egypt, Clyo, Ebenezer, and Shawnee, owes much of
1-11 its character to the Austrian and German settlers who
1-12 populated the area in the early eighteenth century,
1-13 industrious and hard-working people who gave Georgia its
1-14 first orphanage, first school, first grist mill, first saw
1-15 mill, and first rice mill, as well as producing the state's
1-16 first governor, Austrian-born John Adam Treutlen; and
1-17 WHEREAS, while the county has grown in population, much of
1-18 the beauty those early settlers enjoyed can still be seen,
1-19 and the county offers residents and visitors a quiet and
1-20 relaxed way of life with many recreational activities; and
1-21 WHEREAS, the citizens of Effingham County are justly proud
1-22 of their community, its past, and its many contributions to
1-23 the state, and it is only proper to recognize Tuesday,
1-24 January 26, 1999, and "Effingham County Day."
1-25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-26 members of this body recognize Tuesday, January 26, 1999, as
1-27 Effingham County Day and congratulate the citizens of
1-28 Effingham County for their fine community.
1-29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-30 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-31 this resolution to the press and the public.
