A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Recognizing the state's forest products industry and
1- 2 commending the creation of the Sustainable Forestry
1- 3 Initiative; and for other purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, Georgia takes great pride in our state's rich
1- 5 bounty of natural resources, and the careful stewardship of
1- 6 those precious assets is essential if future generations are
1- 7 to benefit from those resources; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, the Georgia forest products industry, in
1- 9 recognition of its stewardship responsibilities in nurturing
1-10 the forest resource, has committed itself to the principle
1-11 of sustainable forestry by initiating the Sustainable
1-12 Forestry Initiative to promote, educate, train, and monitor
1-13 adherence to sustaining the forest resource for future
1-14 generations; and
1-15 WHEREAS, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a
1-16 self-regulatory program based on the responsible
1-17 environmental stewardship of the forests, water resources,
1-18 and wildlife; and
1-19 WHEREAS, an essential component of the Georgia economy, the
1-20 forest products industry, comprises more than a $19.5
1-21 billion economic impact; and
1-22 WHEREAS, the vital importance of the industry underscores
1-23 the necessity for intelligent management of the state's more
1-24 than 24 million acres of forest land.
1-25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-26 members of this body recognize and commend the state's
1-27 forest products industry for its commitment to responsible
1-28 use of natural resources and the creation of the Sustainable
1-29 Forestry Initiative as a means to that end.
1-30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-31 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-32 this resolution to the public and the press.
