                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Designating the S.G. Maddox Highway; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 2  WHEREAS, Mr. S.G. Maddox passed away on November 12, 1999, 
  1- 3  at his residence in Blakely, Georgia, at the age of 98 and, 
  1- 4  while his death was expected, still it left a community 
  1- 5  mourning and contemplating the long life of a truly good 
  1- 6  man; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, he and his wife, Lucy Hilton Maddox, moved to 
  1- 8  Blakely from Dothan, Alabama, in 1927, and he soon founded 
  1- 9  his first business, a cotton gin, and in 1935 he helped with 
  1-10  the reorganization of the First State Bank and was active in 
  1-11  the bank's day-to-day business for many years, and he was 
  1-12  instrumental in founding the Big Top peanut butter plant in 
  1-13  Lexington, Kentucky, and that plant was later sold to 
  1-14  Proctor and Gamble and now makes Jif peanut butter; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, Mr. Maddox was involved with every aspect of 
  1-16  community life, and he was a stalwart in the First Baptist 
  1-17  Church for many years, and he served as Blakely's mayor in 
  1-18  1943 and 1944, was a member of the Rotary Club since 1929, 
  1-19  was a part of the organization of the chamber of commerce in 
  1-20  1944, and was named to the Board of Directors of the Georgia 
  1-21  Department of Industry and Trade by Governor George Busbee; 
  1-22  and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, throughout his life, he continuously enriched the 
  1-24  lives of the community and its citizens with his positive, 
  1-25  caring attitude; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, it is only proper that the members of this body 
  1-27  honor the memory of this outstanding citizen. 
 
  1-28  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the 
  1-29  portion of U.S. Highway 27 in Early County from the Clay 
  1-30  County line south to the Miller County line shall be 
  1-31  designated as the "S.G. Maddox Highway." 
 
  1-32  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation 
  1-33  is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate 
  1-34  signs designating the "S.G. Maddox Highway."

  2- 1  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  2- 2  authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of 
  2- 3  this resolution to the family of S.G. Maddox and to the
