                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Commending Alex Hammond, Jr., for his heroic action in 
  1- 2  saving the life of a fellow citizen; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, Alex Hammond, Jr., of Augusta, Georgia, exhibited 
  1- 4  extraordinary courage on January 19, 1999, when he and David 
  1- 5  Calhoun saved the life of Jim Pontoon whose home was burning 
  1- 6  out of control; and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, at approximately 6:40PM these two "Good Samaritans" 
  1- 8  noticed that the residence was on fire, and without 
  1- 9  hesitation, these brave men entered the home and pulled to 
  1-10  safety Mr. Pontoon who was bound to a wheelchair and unable 
  1-11  to escape on his own; and 
 
  1-12  WHEREAS, the timely response of these two men and their 
  1-13  unselfish concern for personal safety literally saved the 
  1-14  life of this fellow citizen; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, when the firefighters arrived, the home was fully 
  1-16  engulfed with smoke and flames, and the quick thinking and 
  1-17  courageous action of these two heroes prevented the loss of 
  1-18  a life; and 
 
  1-19  WHEREAS, it is most appropriate to acknowledge the valiant 
  1-20  efforts of Alex Hammond, Jr., and David Calhoun who saved 
  1-21  the life of a total stranger and whose courage merits 
  1-22  recognition and praise. 
 
  1-23  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the 
  1-24  members of this body recognize and commend Alex Hammond, 
  1-25  Jr., on his heroic efforts that saved the life of a fellow 
  1-26  citizen and convey to him their highest respect and 
  1-27  admiration. 
 
  1-28  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  1-29  authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
