SENATE RESOLUTION 77

A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Designating the Marshall Shirah Memorial Bridge; designating
1- 2 the intersection of State Highway 515 and State Highway 108
1- 3 as "Tara and Megan Bishop Intersection"; and for other
1- 4 purposes.
1- 5 WHEREAS, Marshall Brandon Shirah was the beloved son of Beau
1- 6 and Nancy Shirah of McIntosh County, Georgia; and
1- 7 WHEREAS, a student at the McIntosh County Academy in Darien,
1- 8 Georgia, Marshall's life ended on March 21, 1997, in a
1- 9 tragic construction accident on the job site where he worked
1-10 with his father building the Interstate 95 South Altamaha
1-11 Bridge; and
1-12 WHEREAS, Marshall was deeply loved by his family and friends
1-13 and his death has brought great sorrow to the community in
1-14 which he lived; and
1-15 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the memory of
1-16 Marshall Shirah be honored and memorialized.
1-17 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
1-18 GEORGIA that the members of this body honor the life of
1-19 Marshall Brandon Shirah and express regret at his passing.
1-20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the bridge located on Interstate
1-21 95 on the Glynn County and McIntosh County boundary, between
1-22 exits 9 and 10, over the Altamaha River be designated the
1-23 Marshall Shirah Memorial Bridge.
1-24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation
1-25 is authorized and directed to place and maintain appropriate
1-26 signs at appropriate locations designating said bridge as
1-27 provided in this resolution.
1-28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-29 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-30 this resolution to the parents of Marshall Shirah.
1-31 WHEREAS, on July 11, 1997, Tara Bishop and Megan Bishop
1-32 tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident at

2- 1 the intersection of State Highway 515 and State Highway 108
2- 2 in Pickens County, Georgia; and
2- 3 WHEREAS, loss of life on the highways of the state is always
2- 4 a tragedy, and the loss is made all the more severe when
2- 5 young lives are suddenly cut short; and
2- 6 WHEREAS, these two sisters were students; 20 year-old Tara
2- 7 was transferring from Kennesaw College to Reinhardt College,
2- 8 and 13 year-old Megan was a student at Teasley Middle School
2- 9 in Cherokee County; and
2-10 WHEREAS, the grief of their parents, Betty and Larry Bishop,
2-11 and other members of their family was deeply shared by the
2-12 local community who will long remember these special young
2-13 women; and
2-14 WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Cherokee County and
2-15 Pickens County, proper recognition of the loss of these
2-16 talented and beloved young women is most appropriate.
2-17 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
2-18 GEORGIA that the members of this body honor the memory of
2-19 Tara Bishop and Megan Bishop and designate the intersection
2-20 of State Highway 515 and State Highway 108 in Pickens County
2-21 as "Tara and Megan Bishop Intersection."
2-22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation
2-23 is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate
2-24 signs so designating the intersection.
2-25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
2-26 authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of
2-27 this resolution to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bishop and the
2-28 Department of Transportation.
