Senator Phil Gingrey, a Republican, begins his first term as a state senator during the 1999
Legislative Session. He has been appointed to serve on the Banking and Financial
Institutions, Education, Retirement, and Transportation Committees.
Senator Gingrey, a Georgia native, was born and raised in Augusta. After high school, he
attended Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received a degree in chemistry. He
returned to Augusta where he attended the Medical College of Georgia and completed his
Ob-Gyn residency. Currently, Senator Gingrey maintains a successful obstetrical practice
with Marietta Ob-Gyn Affiliates. He is a conservative Pro-Life Republican, who believes in
quality public education for all children. As a physician, he aims to assure that all patients
maintain the freedom to choose their own doctor.
From 1993 to1997, Senator Gingrey served on the Marietta City School Board and was
elected Chairman by his colleagues three of the four years. As a member of the 1996
Leadership Cobb class, he received the Ernest Barrett Outstanding Leadership Award.
Senator Gingrey is currently a member of the Cobb County Medical Society, the Medical
Association of Georgia, the American Medical Association, the Georgia Ob-Gyn Society
and he served as a board member for the North Cobb division of the American Cancer
Society.
For 23 years, Senator Gingrey and his wife, the former Billie Ayers, have lived in Cobb
County. They have four children, Billy, Gannon, Phyllis and Laura Neill, and recently
became grandparents of identical twin girls. The Senator and his family are members of St.
Joseph's Catholic Church in Marietta.
The 37th senatorial district includes portions of Cobb and Cherokee counties.
