Richard O. Marable of Rome was first elected to the state Senate from the 52nd District in
1990.
Marable, a Democrat, serves as the Senate Majority Whip and is chairman of the
Education Committee -- the first classroom teacher to hold the post. He is vice-chairman of
the Rules Committee and a member of the influential Appropriations Committee. He also
serves on the Transportation and Reapportionment Committees. In addition, Senator
Marable serves as an ex-officio member of the Higher Education Committee.
Marable is the former chairman of the Youth, Aging and Human Ecology Committee.
In addition to his standing committee assignments, Marable has served on a number of
special interim study committees including the Senate Study Committee on Clean Air
Solutions, the Joint Senate-House Study Committee on Local Government Services, the
Senate Study Committee on Non-Certified School Personnel, the Senate Study Committee
on Children at Risk, the Senate Study Committee on Year-Round Education, and the Joint
Senate-House Study Committee on the Creation of a State Agency for the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing. He was co-chairman of the Joint Senate-House Study Committee on School
Construction. He currently serves on the Senate Young Drivers Study Committee.
Senator Marable chaired the Elder Abuse Task Force and also served on the Senate Study
Committee on Core Knowledge for Education and the Georgia State Museum and State
Library Study Committee.
Marable represents Georgia on the Children, Families and Social Services Committee of
the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). He is chairman of the Education
Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) and also serves on the SLC's
Management Committee. He is also a member of the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority
Overview Committee.
Active in community affairs, Marable is a former board member of the Georgia Arrive Alive
Program, a member of Civil Defense and the Red Cross and a volunteer for the Georgia
Heart Association.
Senator Marable was recently selected to participate as a Roundtable Member to the
Oxford International Round Table on Educational Policy at the University of Oxford,
Oxford, England.
He is serving as executive secretary emeritus for the Georgia National Honor Society and
has been honored as the Teacher of the Year. He was recently inducted into the Floyd
County Hall of Fame.
Born March 23, 1949 in Floyd County, Marable earned a BS degree from Berry College
and a master's degree in education from West Georgia College. He is a businessman and an
educator.
Marable and his wife, Kathie, are the parents of three children -- Jennifer Joan (J.J.), Benji,
and Mackenzie. They are members of the Oak Hill Church of Christ.
The 52nd Senate District includes Floyd County and portions of Bartow County.
