A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT

To amend Code Section 40-5-32 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to expiration and renewal of drivers´ licenses and reexamination requirements, so as to change certain provisions relating to the year in which licenses shall expire; to provide for related matters; to provide effective dates; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

PART I
SECTION 1-1.

Code Section 40-5-32 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to expiration and renewal of drivers´ licenses and reexamination requirements, is amended by striking subsection (a) and inserting in lieu thereof the following:
"(a) Every driver´s license issued on or after July 1, 2001, shall expire on the licensee´s birthday in the fourth tenth year following the issuance of such license. Every such license shall be renewed on or before its expiration upon application, payment of the required fee, and satisfactory completion of the examination required or authorized by subsection (b) of this Code section. Every holder of a veteran´s or honorary license issued on or after July 1, 2001, shall meet the requirements of subsection (b) of this Code section on or before his or her birthday every four ten years, beginning from the date on which the holder was last required to take an examination under former Ga. L. 1972, p. 1076, as amended by Ga. L. 1973, pp. 916, 917 following the issuance of such license. The department may allow a veteran or honorary license holder to retain his or her expired veteran´s or honorary license as a souvenir. Drivers´ licenses, including without limitation veterans´ and honorary licenses, issued prior to July 1, 2001, shall expire according to former provisions of this subsection which were in effect at the time of issuance. The board shall issue such rules and regulations as are required to enforce this subsection."

PART II
SECTION 2-1.

PART III
SECTION 3-1.

(a) This Act shall become effective July 1, 2001, except as otherwise provided by subsection (b) of this section.
(b) Each provision amended in Part II of this Act shall become effective and supersede that respective provision amended in Part I of this Act on July1, 2001, or on such date thereafter as that same provision, as amended by an Act approved April 28, 2000 (Ga. L. 2000, p. 951), becomes fully effective pursuant to Section 13-1 of that 2000 Act, whichever is later.

SECTION 3-2.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
