A RESOLUTION
Commending the approximately 13,000 men and women of
the Georgia Army and Air National Guard and declaring National Guard Day in
Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, there are approximately 13,000 men
and women in the Georgia Army and Air National Guard providing dedicated service
to this state and the United States;
and
WHEREAS, since its inception in 1773,
the Georgia militia, now the Georgia National Guard, has had a significant role
in the defense of the colony, state, and nation;
and
WHEREAS, throughout history and in every
war that Americans have been called upon to defend our nation's liberties and
freedoms, the men and women of the Georgia National Guard have taken up arms to
defend this nation, and many have given their lives to secure the freedoms we
hold dear today; and
WHEREAS, during the
past year, Georgia National Guardsmen have been ready when our fellow Georgians
needed assistance during hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods;
and
WHEREAS, in addition, Georgia National
Guardsmen performed critical relief missions in war-torn Bosnia and deployed
around the globe in "real world" missions that strengthened the security of our
nation; and
WHEREAS, the National Guard
extends a helping hand to local communities through programs like the Youth
Challenge Academy, which provides a second chance to many young Georgians; the
Counter-drug and Drug Demand Reduction Program, which continuously fights
America's "War on Drugs"; and civic action programs that place National Guard
resources and know-how at the disposal of local communities;
and
WHEREAS, the future of the Georgia
National Guard rests upon Georgians in uniform who embody the values of
Integrity First, Service before Self, and Excellence in All We Do;
and
WHEREAS, the Georgia Army and Air
National Guard remains a professional, prepared, and highly trained
organization, tested by crises, and more than able to respond at home or
abroad.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Georgia
National Guard and declare January 30, 2001, to be National Guard Day in
Georgia.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to Major General David Poythress, Adjutant
General for the Georgia Department of
