A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of Earl T. Shinhoster; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS, upon the death of
Earl T. Shinhoster on June 11, 2000, the citizens of the State of Georgia lost a
true champion; and
WHEREAS, he was a
dedicated and effective advocate for justice and human dignity and wherever that
cause could be served he could be depended upon to go;
and
WHEREAS, despite tear-gas bombs and
threats to his life, Earl Shinhoster spent more than 30 years pioneering civil
rights locally, nationally, and internationally;
and
WHEREAS, as remembered by friends, he
was genuinely concerned with the welfare of the masses and was uniquely willing
to place the well-being of the cause above his own well-being;
and
WHEREAS, a Savannah native, he was known
for his tireless civil rights crusade, including service as acting executive
director and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People from February 1995 to February 1996;
and
WHEREAS, he began his NAACP career in
the 1960s as a youth volunteer leader, and over the years, he worked his way up
to top positions in the organization and helped to maintain the position of the
NAACP as the nation's most viable civil rights organization;
and
WHEREAS, most recently, he was involved
in a nation-wide effort to raise census participation among African Americans as
director of the Voter Empowerment project and last year, kicked off the
project´s
campaign in Savannah; and
WHEREAS, his
lifelong passion for justice and equality helped to change the vision of life's
possibilities for citizens of this state and throughout the country;
and
WHEREAS, he is survived by his beloved
wife, Ruby, and by his son, Michael.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members
of this body honor the life and enduring legacy of Earl T. Shinhoster, express
their utmost gratitude for his unparalleled service on behalf of the citizens of
the State of Georgia, and extend their sincere condolences to his
family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Ruby
Shinhoster.
