A RESOLUTION

Expressing regret at the loss of US Navy Signalman Seaman Recruit Cherone Louis Gunn; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, US Navy Signalman Seaman Recruit Cherone Louis Gunn was tragically killed October 12, 2000, in a bombing incident by terrorists as his warship USS Cole docked for refueling in the ancient port of Aden in Yemen; and

WHEREAS, he was a native of the Tidewater area of Virginia whose father was a 23 year Navy veteran, and he had joined the Navy in January, 2000, attended the Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, and was assigned to the Cole´s crew on May 23, 2000; and

WHEREAS, he resided in Rex, Georgia, with his uncle´s family and served as a communications specialist trained in flag and flashing light signals; and

WHEREAS, this young, 22 year old sailor had enlisted in the Navy to see the world and to serve his country, and he hoped to gain the experience and training that would permit him to enter the field of law enforcement as a professional career; and

WHEREAS, he had demonstrated eagerness, motivation, and discipline throughout his training and conducted himself with the utmost capability, and his loss of life in service to his country will be long remembered by family and friends and honored by all Georgians.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body express deep regret at the tragic loss of US Navy Signalman Seaman Recruit Cherone Louis Gunn and convey their sympathy to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to his family.
