Senate Resolution 179
By: Senators Cheeks of the 23rd, Butler of the 55th, Jackson of the 50th, Smith of the 25th, Marable of the 52nd and others

A RESOLUTION

Expressing regret at the passing of Perry Luther Streat; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 10, 2001, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the tragic and untimely passing of Perry Luther Streat; and

WHEREAS, he was a dedicated public servant who strove for excellence in all his endeavors and whose primary concern was the welfare and safety of the citizens of this state; and

WHEREAS, this exceptional individual exhibited outstanding leadership and meticulous attention to detail in all his duties throughout his career of public service as a justice of the peace and a member of the City Council for the City of Nicholls and through his membership in the Nicholls Baptist Church, Georgia Cattlemen´s Association, and the Woodmen of the World; and

WHEREAS, this Coffee County native´s trademark sayings will be long remembered. His response to "How are you doing?" was always "About half way," and when asked how many children he had, he always responded, "I have five boys and each of them have a sister," which led many persons who did not listen closely to believe that he had ten children instead of his five boys and a girl; and

WHEREAS, with five boys, he had to have ingenuity to keep up with them. Because the boys took so many of his tools and misplaced them, he painted a red circle around the handle of every tool that he owned so that he could find them more easily; and

WHEREAS, he shared his life with his beloved wife of 62 years, Grace Lee Streat; and

WHEREAS, he lived his life on the simple premise of honesty in all dealings, whether it was with his Maker, his family, his friends, the people he encountered, or himself; and

WHEREAS, his unparalleled organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his acute sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of his community and state earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates; and

WHEREAS, the untimely passing of this generous, kind, and devoted family man leaves an unfillable void in the hearts and lives of his family and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Perry Luther Streat.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Perry Luther Streat.
