A RESOLUTION
Expressing regret at the passing of Dr. Charlton Watson
Tebeau; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Dr.
Charlton Watson Tebeau, a native of Effingham County, Georgia, was a
distinguished professor of history at the University of Miami who was nationally
recognized for his scholarship and teaching and was an inspiration to countless
students; and
WHEREAS, he was the eldest of nine
sons born to Florence Ellen Davis and James William Tebeau, graduated from
Effingham Academy in 1921, completed Sparks College Institute in Valdosta,
received a bachelor's degree at the University of Chattanooga in 1930, and
earned his master's degree in 1931 and Ph.D. in 1933 from the University of
Iowa; and
WHEREAS, he taught at North Dakota State
in Fargo from 1935 through 1939, married Violet Harsler in 1937, and moved to
the University of Miami where he was the chairman of the history department for
23 years and authored publications until he retired in 1971;
and
WHEREAS, following the loss of his beloved wife
in 1980, he relocated in Springfield, Georgia, where he greatly assisted the
Historic Effingham Society and offered education and guidance in the
preservation of the community's wonderful history;
and
WHEREAS, the marvelous contributions made by
this scholarly, gracious gentleman have enlightened the citizens of Effingham
County, and his legacy and memory are
cherished.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
SENATE that the members of this body express regret at the passing of Dr.
Charlton Watson Tebeau, a distinguished Georgian, and convey their deepest
sympathy to the members of his family.

FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to
transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Charlton
Watson Tebeau.
