A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Trooper First
Class Lisa Stocks of the Georgia State Patrol received the Officer of the Year
for Valor Award for 2000 from the Peace Officers Association of Georgia in
recognition of her exceptional courage in the line of duty;
and
WHEREAS, on January 3, 2000, she responded to a
call from Coffee County 911 to assist Broxton Police Department Officer James
Bryan who was shot while serving an eviction order; and she bravely tried to aid
the officer in the midst of gunfire from the assailant only to witness the death
of that officer and the death of Coffee County Deputy Almond Merritt who arrived
during the gunfire and was fatally shot in the chest;
and
WHEREAS, she unselfishly placed her life on the
line to protect and assist a fellow law enforcement officer unaffiliated and
unknown to her, and the professional conduct and resolve she demonstrated during
this tragedy merit the highest praise; and
WHEREAS,
Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks exercised remarkable control and unflinching
direction in the face of gunfire in an effort to save the life of another
officer, and her actions have brought honor to all who valiantly serve in law
enforcement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend Trooper First Class
Lisa Stocks of the Georgia State Patrol on receiving the Officer of the Year for
Valor Award for 2000.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks.
