By: Senators Hill of the 4th, Streat of the 19th and Bowen of the 13th

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks of the Georgia State Patrol received the Officer of the Year for Valor Award for 2000 from the Peace Officers Association of Georgia in recognition of her exceptional courage in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, on January 3, 2000, she responded to a call from Coffee County 911 to assist Broxton Police Department Officer James Bryan who was shot while serving an eviction order; and she bravely tried to aid the officer in the midst of gunfire from the assailant only to witness the death of that officer and the death of Coffee County Deputy Almond Merritt who arrived during the gunfire and was fatally shot in the chest; and

WHEREAS, she unselfishly placed her life on the line to protect and assist a fellow law enforcement officer unaffiliated and unknown to her, and the professional conduct and resolve she demonstrated during this tragedy merit the highest praise; and

WHEREAS, Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks exercised remarkable control and unflinching direction in the face of gunfire in an effort to save the life of another officer, and her actions have brought honor to all who valiantly serve in law enforcement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks of the Georgia State Patrol on receiving the Officer of the Year for Valor Award for 2000.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Trooper First Class Lisa Stocks.
