A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the Georgia Southern University
Football Team; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the
Georgia Southern University Football Team has an outstanding tradition of
excellence in the national collegiate sport of football and brought fame and
honor to the university, students, and state as the NCAA 1-AA National Champions
for 2000; and
WHEREAS, these terrific athletes
earned the sixth national title for Georgia Southern, the third in the last ten
years and the second in as many years, and the 13-2 overall record is one of the
third-best seasons ever and the best since 1999, another 13-2 record season;
and
WHEREAS, the team won the Southern Conference
Championship for the fourth straight year and the fifth championship ever, and
the superior performance of these players and their superb teamwork earned Head
Coach Paul Johnson the AFCA Division I-AA Region II title as Coach of the Year;
and
WHEREAS, the Eagles broke or tied 51 team or
individual records in 2000; won more games (40) than any other NCAA Division I
(A or AA) team in the nation during the last three seasons; and posted an
all-time record of 34-6 in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, the top record in
the history of the division.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes and commends the Georgia
Southern University Football Team on its fabulous season and its championship
title and conveys its congratulations and best wishes to the team and Head Coach
Paul Johnson.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate
copy of this resolution to Head Coach Paul Johnson.
