Senate Resolution

A RESOLUTION
Recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc., which was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908, has
the distinction of being the first sorority established by African American
college women and has become an international organization with 850 chapters;
and
WHEREAS, Georgia hosts 50 of these
undergraduate and graduate chapters located on college and university campuses
and in communities throughout the state;
and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is
committed to community service and actively contributes to the educational,
civic, and social life of Georgia's citizens;
and
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the Capitol is a national
program in which members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., throughout the
country meet with their legislators to address issues that are pertinent to
their communities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body declare February 19, 2001,
as AKA Day at the Capitol and commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc., for their community service and extend to them their best
wishes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary
of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this
resolution to Sonja Garcia and Marjorie H. Young, Georgia's Alpha Kappa Alpha
Connection Coordinator and Alpha Kappa Alpha National President Norma
White.
