A RESOLUTION
Commending and congratulating Curtis Baptist Church in
Augusta, Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Curtis Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, celebrated the congregation’s
one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary on Sunday, January 7, 2001;
and
WHEREAS, a mission Sunday school begun in 1869
led to the organization of Curtis Baptist Church in 1876;
and
WHEREAS, Curtis Baptist Church is affiliated
with the Southern Baptist Convention and functions as a family of faith
believers in Jesus Christ, who seek to reach, teach, evangelize, and disciple by
ministering to Augusta, the central Savannah River area, and the world;
and
WHEREAS, the ministers and members of the
congregation have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to do whatever needs to
be done to spread the Gospel; and
WHEREAS, Curtis
Baptist Church has been truly evangelical, planting churches locally and as far
away as Mombassa, Kenya and Moscow, Russia; sharing the faith in India, Korea,
Indonesia, and Brazil; and serving the needs of orphans and the sick;
and
WHEREAS, the church’s community
ministries include the Care Pregnancy Center, the Girls Club of Augusta, the
Riverwalk Ministry to Children, and the Richmond County Jail;
and
WHEREAS, the congregation’s ministry for
the deaf and hearing impaired began in 1937 with a Sunday school class and now
includes a Bible study class, interpretation of Sunday services, weekly
discipleship classes, visitation, and special worship services and conferences;
and
WHEREAS, the congregation established the
Curtis Baptist School in 1964, and presently helps prepare 478 students for life
and eternity, including 85 in day care, 214 in elementary school, and 179 in
high school; and
WHEREAS, the faith, determination,
perseverance, love, prayer, and vision of the ministers and members of Curtis
Baptist Church in constant outreach to people of all ages, races, and
socioeconomic backgrounds have transformed Curtis Baptist Church into a flagship
church for the Southern Baptist Convention.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
congratulate the ministers and members of Curtis Baptist Church on 125 years of
service and ministry and commend their willing spirits and untiring efforts.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the
Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this
resolution to Curtis Baptist Church.
