A RESOLUTION
Commending the Leadership Academy for Black Males sponsored
by the DeKalb County Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, in 1991, the DeKalb County
Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., was formed and the Leadership Academy
for Black Males was initiated shortly thereafter as its flagship community
service project with the support of local businesses, public agencies, and
educational institutions; and
WHEREAS, the mission
of the Leadership Academy for Black Males is to supplement parental guidance for
selected youth and serve as a parallel learning and achievement program in
cooperation with the DeKalb County Public School System;
and
WHEREAS, the Leadership Academy for Black Males
is designed to address the crises in which today´s youth find themselves;
and
WHEREAS, like in many communities, young people
of color in DeKalb County and metro Atlanta face problems of poverty, crime,
single parenthood, drugs, violence, and hopelessness;
and
WHEREAS, the Leadership Academy for Black Males
focuses on providing a series of structured educational activities which allow
young people to learn and experience new survival techniques;
and
WHEREAS, the Leadership Academy for Black Males
conducts its programs and activities at established organizations and companies
throughout the metro Atlanta area; and
WHEREAS,
entities such as the DeKalb County Public School System, First Southern Bank,
Georgia Power Company, Emory University, DeKalb College, the DeKalb County
Department of Public Safety, CNN Center, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for
Nonviolent Social Change, The Carter Center, the Georgia General Assembly, and
the Georgia Association of Educators provide facilities and financial or human
resources to ensure successful implementation of the program;
and
WHEREAS, a guiding principle for the Leadership
Academy for Black Males is that "one must effectively manage oneself before
being able to manage others," and it is this performance based philosophy which
underlies all of its activities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and heartily
commend the Leadership Academy for Black Males and its sponsor, the DeKalb
County Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the DeKalb County Chapter
of 100 Black Men of America, Inc.
