Senate Resolution
949

A RESOLUTION
Recognizing Booker T. Washington Comprehensive High School
and honoring the Class of 1952; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, there is only one school in
Atlanta, Georgia, named for the famed educator Booker Taliaferro Washington and
that is the illustrious Booker Taliaferro Washington Comprehensive High School,
which has continuously epitomized the qualities of excellence which are forever
associated with its namesake; and
WHEREAS, Booker
T. Washington Comprehensive High School was founded in 1924 under the auspices
of the Atlanta Board of Education with the late Charles L. Harper serving as its
first principal; and
WHEREAS, it has the historical
distinction of being the first public high school for black students in the City
of Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, situated on a 21.4 acre
tract of land, Booker T. Washington was classified as one of the largest public
high schools in the southeast from its founding;
and
WHEREAS, in 1924, the school´s initial
enrollment was 1,565 students with a staff of only 32 teachers;
and
WHEREAS, today, Booker T. Washington has an
enrollment of over 1,300 students with a faculty and staff of 130;
and
WHEREAS, in 1986, Booker T. Washington High
School was placed on the National Register of Historic Places;
and
WHEREAS, for 78 years, Booker T. Washington
Comprehensive High School has been singularly dedicated to the goal of educating
the children of Atlanta and the accomplishments of its many illustrious
graduates are many, varied, and worthy of great tribute and none more so than
the outstanding Class of 1952 whose members have proudly upheld the tradition of
excellence instilled by their alma mater;
and
WHEREAS, Principal Harper and the many
dedicated and talented principals and teachers who have followed him and who
have contributed to the school´s outstanding achievements are fondly
remembered and greatly honored.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes Booker T. Washington
Comprehensive High School for its outstanding achievements and invaluable
contributions to the welfare of this state and nation and honors the
distinguished Class of 1952.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to the principal of Booker T. Washington
Comprehensive High School.
