VINCENT D. FORT

Senator Vincent D. Fort is serving his third term as the Senator from the 39th District of Georgia, Fulton County, including parts of Atlanta and East Point.
Senator Fort is currently the chairman of the Retirement Committee. He is also a member of the Committees on Appropriations, Judiciary, and Rules. In addition, he serves as a member of the MARTA Oversight Committee and serves as the Secretary for the Fulton County Senate Delegation.
As an educator, he has taken a special interest in improving the quality of public education for all of Georgia's children. In 1998, Senator Fort chaired the Senate Study Committee on Public Education Disciplinary Reform. Moreover, he is the chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Committee on Education.
Senator Fort continues to be a highly active member of the General Assembly, pursuing and successfully achieving a number of legislative objectives, most notably the passage of what is commonly known as the Hate Crimes Law, Senate Bill 390. SB 390 is designed to provide for enhanced penalties for defendants who intentionally select their victim due to bias or prejudice such as crimes based on race, religion, ethnicity, disability, and sexual orientation. Moreover, he has been on the forefront for providing a safer Georgia, sponsoring and co-sponsoring bills against prostitution and drug-related nuisances.
Senator Fort is currently a professor of history and political science at Morris Brown College. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in American History at Central Connecticut State College and his Masters Degree in African-American History at Atlanta University.
He has done two years of further study at Emory University. His research area is the post-WW II Civil Rights Movement. He also served as assistant director of the M.L.K., Jr. Papers Project.
Senator Fort's unwavering commitment to making Georgia a better place to live has been recognized by several organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Anti-Defamation League.
Senator Fort is married and has three children.
