A BILL TO BE
ENTITLED AN ACT
To amend Part 7 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the
Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to HOPE scholarships and grants, so
as to provide for a review of the academic performance of a HOPE scholarship
recipient at the conclusion of every 18 quarter hours or 12 semester hours for
continuation of such scholarship; to provide for related matters; to provide an
effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other
purposes.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
GEORGIA:
SECTION 1.
Part 7 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the Official
Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to HOPE scholarships and grants, is amended
by striking subsection (e) of Code Section 20-3-519.2, relating to eligibility
requirements for a HOPE scholarship at a public postsecondary institution, and
inserting in lieu thereof a new subsection (e) to read as
follows: "(e)
A student who fails to maintain a cumulative grade point average of at
least 3.0 at the end of the quarter or semester in which the student has
attempted 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours may attend the next 45 quarter
or 30 semester hours without a HOPE scholarship. An otherwise eligible student
who regains a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the end of a
quarter or semester in which the student has attempted 90 quarter hours or 135
quarter hours or 60 semester hours or 90 semester hours may requalify for a HOPE
scholarship The academic performance of students who receive HOPE
scholarships under the provisions of this Code section shall be reviewed at the
conclusion of each 18 quarter or 12 semester hours attempted and each multiple
thereof. If, at any such review, the student does not have a cumulative grade
point average of at least 3.0, the student shall not be eligible for further
HOPE scholarship funds unless the student requalifies for a HOPE scholarship
under subsection (b), (c), or (d) of this Code
section."
SECTION 2.
Said part is further amended by striking subsection (e) of
Code Section 20-2-519.3, relating to eligibility requirements for a HOPE
scholarship at a private postsecondary institution, and inserting in lieu
thereof a new subsection (e) to read as
follows: "(e)
An otherwise eligible student who fails to maintain a cumulative grade
point average of at least 3.0 at the end of the quarter or semester in which the
student has attempted 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours may attend the next
45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours without a HOPE scholarship. A student who
regains a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at end of the quarter
or semester in which the student has attempted 90 quarter hours or 60 semester
hours may requalify for a HOPE scholarship. A student who regains a cumulative
grade point average of at least 3.0 at the end of the quarter or semester in
which the student has attempted 135 quarter hours or 90 semester hours may
requalify for a HOPE scholarship The academic performance of
students who receive HOPE scholarships under the provisions of this Code section
shall be reviewed at the conclusion of each 18 quarter or 12 semester hours
attempted and each multiple thereof. If, at any such review, the student does
not have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, the student shall not
be eligible for further HOPE scholarship funds unless the student requalifies
for a HOPE scholarship under subsection (b), (c), or (d) of this Code
section."
SECTION 3.
This Act shall become effective upon its approval by the
Governor or upon its becoming law without such approval.
SECTION 4.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
repealed.
