A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT

To amend Article 1 of Chapter 16 of Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions relative to state property, so as to prohibit the naming or renaming of state property for any elected public official unless he or she has been out of office for at least 25 years or is deceased; to provide that any such state property which was so designated prior to July 1, 2003, shall be renamed; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
Article 1 of Chapter 16 of Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions relative to state property, is amended by adding at the end thereof a new Code section to read as follows:
"50_16_20.
(a) On and after July 1, 2003, no property owned by the state including, but not limited to, state parks, buildings, rooms, conference centers, highways, roads, or bridges, shall be officially designated or redesignated by the General Assembly or any state agency, state authority, or political subdivision by the name and in honor of any state or local elected public official until such public official has been out of office for at least 25 years or is deceased, and no signs or markers shall be erected which so designate any such state owned property.
(b) Any property owned by the state including, but not limited to, state parks, buildings, rooms, conference centers, highways, roads, or bridges, which on July 1, 2003, was designated in the name and in honor of any state or local elected public official who as of such date was not out of office for at least 25 years or was deceased shall:
(1) Revert to the designation in effect immediately prior to its having been renamed in honor of the elected public official; or
(2) If there was no prior designation, be renamed by the competent authority in a manner not inconsistent with subsection (a) of this Code section."

SECTION 2.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
