A RESOLUTION
To commend Sano Themia Halo and Thea Halo; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, the great state of Georgia is
home to many ethnic communities that value and cherish the principles of freedom
and democracy upon which our country was founded;
and
WHEREAS, tragically, hundreds of thousands of
Greeks, Armenians, and Assyrians were killed or displaced from 1915 to 1923 in
areas surrounding the Black Sea Coast, Pontus, and Smyrna in Asia Minor;
and
WHEREAS, acknowledgment and awareness of this
time in history serves as a reminder to all Americans of the consequences of
bigotry, hatred, and intolerance; and
WHEREAS, it
is fitting and proper that all freedom_loving people worldwide and in the State
of Georgia join with the Greek_American community in solemn commemoration of the
suffering and cruelty inflicted upon the defenseless and unarmed during the
persecution of Greeks in Asia Minor; and
WHEREAS,
Sano Themia Halo experienced and survived the traumatic and haunting events of
this time, witnessing the decimation of her village as she knew it and the
annihilation of her family; and
WHEREAS, Thea Halo
vividly captured the harrowing and poignant firsthand account of her mother Sano
Themia Halo´s survival of the Turkish death marches and genocide in the
period following World War I in the writing of her mother´s memoir, "Not
Even My Name"; and
WHEREAS, both Sano Themia Halo
and Thea Halo have exhibited great courage and determination in bringing this
period to light through their writings and presentations all around this great
land; and WHEREAS, both women are true humanitarians,
great citizens, and friends.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend
and express their grateful appreciation and admiration for these great women,
Sano Themia Halo and Thea Halo.
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and
directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sano Themia Halo
and Thea Halo.
