A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Miss Laura Bland, 2003 Georgia Watermelon Queen, and inviting her to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Miss Laura Bland was recently selected as the 2003 Georgia Watermelon Queen by the Georgia Watermelon Association. In Laura, the association found a deserving queen as she is a talented, beautiful, and accomplished young woman; and

WHEREAS, Laura, the 18 year-old daughter of Jerry Bland of Helena, Georgia, and Judy Walker of St. Simons Island, Georgia, is a freshman attending Middle Georgia College in Cochran, and after completing her course work there she intends to transfer to Mercer University in Macon to pursue a degree in Education; and

WHEREAS, Laura is very active in her school and community, and she serves as the Vice-president of Economic Affairs for the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Eastman, is Chief Executive Officer of Dodge International Marketing Company, and while still in high school she was a chairperson of the Distributive Education Clubs of America, secretary of the French Club, and secretary of the Anchor Club, and she was selected Best Dressed as a Senior Favorite and was on the homecoming court, and she was selected Who´s Who and is a HOPE Scholarship recipient; and

WHEREAS, she enjoys hunting, traveling, photography, and collecting antiques; and

WHEREAS, as Georgia Watermelon Queen, Laura is the official spokesperson for the Georgia Watermelon Association, and she will make many appearances this year across the state on behalf of Georgia´s watermelon industry. With her poise and intelligence and connection to farming, Laura will be an exemplary representative of the agriculture and watermelon industries in Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend Miss Laura Bland on her selection as the 2003 Georgia Watermelon Queen and for her many achievements and outstanding representation of the State of Georgia and its agricultural heritage.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Miss Laura Bland is invited to appear before the House of Representatives on such date at a time to be designated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Miss Laura Bland.
