A RESOLUTION

Designating March 11, 2004, as "NASCAR Day" and recognizing the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing for its many contributions to the State of Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, March 11, 2004, is "NASCAR Day" and the State of Georgia is proud of its long and storied affiliation with the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR); and

WHEREAS, Atlanta Motor Speedway hosts two of NASCAR´s most thrilling and prestigious Nextel Cup Series events, the Golden Corral 500 and the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500; and

WHEREAS, these races represent the two largest single-day sporting events each year in the State of Georgia, attracting fans from all 50 states and more than a dozen foreign nations along with more than ten million viewers worldwide; and

WHEREAS, in 2001, NASCAR drew 6.5 million fans to more than 70 events and more than 75 million television viewers, making NASCAR the fastest growing sport on television; and

WHEREAS, only NASCAR can provide the kind of thrilling excitement and edge-of-your-seat drama that racing fans and Georgians crave and love; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the contributions of NASCAR, both sporting and economic, to our state be recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body designates March 11, 2004, as "NASCAR Day" and recognizes NASCAR for its many contributions to the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body express their pride and honor in hosting NASCAR and its Nextel Cup series races in our state and encourage NASCAR to continue to schedule all races presently being held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing.
