House Resolution 145
By: Representatives Jamieson of the 22nd, McBee of the 74th, Reece of the 11th, Houston of the 139th, Purcell of the 122nd, and others

A RESOLUTION

Urging the State Board of Education to adopt one or more salary step increases for teachers who have taught for over 20 years; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, a proper quality education for the young people of this state is the single most important objective of the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, dedication and diligence by committed teachers foster excellence in education; and

WHEREAS, the State Board of Education has established a series of 12 salary step increases for teachers based upon longevity, but the last such step comes after 19 years of service; and

WHEREAS, under current law, teachers cannot retire and begin drawing a full benefit until they have accrued at least 30 years of creditable service or have reached the age of 60 years, but teachers cannot look forward to a salary step increase after they have served for 20 years; and

WHEREAS, not only would one or more salary step increases coming after 20 years or more of service improve teacher morale and encourage teachers to remain in the profession, but also any teacher who has taught that long deserves an increase.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge the State Board of Education to adopt one or more salary step increases for service beyond 20 years, subject to adequate appropriations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the State Board of Education.
