House Resolution
1539 By: Representatives Buck of the 112th,
Coleman of the 118th, Stanley-Turner of the 43rd, Post 2,
Snow of the 1st, Hanner of the 133rd, and others
A RESOLUTION
Commending Lieutenant Colonel Myron E. Freeman and
congratulating him on the occasion of his retirement; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, Myron E. Freeman was born April
27, 1950, in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from
Atlanta´s
Luther Judson Price High School in 1968;
and
WHEREAS, he served in the United States Army as
a military policeman at Fort Dix, New Jersey; was honorably discharged in 1971;
and joined the Georgia State Patrol in May of 1972;
and
WHEREAS, he was first assigned to the Georgia
State Patrol post in Savannah and later assigned to the
Governor´s
mansion, thus becoming the first African American to be assigned to executive
security; and
WHEREAS, he was promoted to the rank
of corporal under Governor Jimmy Carter;
and
WHEREAS, while serving as security aide to
Governor George D. Busbee, Lt. Colonel Freeman was promoted to sergeant,
lieutenant, and captain and designated supervisor, head of security by Governor
Busbee and again was the first African American to hold these titles;
and
WHEREAS, he was promoted to the rank of major
in March of 1989 under Governor Joe Frank Harris and, in 1993, assumed the
duties of deputy commissioner for the Georgia Department of Public Safety under
Governor Zell Miller; and
WHEREAS, in 2001,
Governor Barnes and Department of Motor Vehicle Safety Commissioner Tim Burgess
swore in Lt. Colonel Freeman as a member of the Department of Motor Vehicle
Safety where he currently serves as accreditation and certification officer for
the new agency; and WHEREAS, Lt. Colonel Freeman holds
a
bachelor´s
degree in criminal justice, a
master´s
degree in public administration, and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia;
and
WHEREAS, he is a member of the National
Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the State Personnel
Directors´
Council, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Advisory Committee, and the Peace
Officers Association of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, he is
married to the beautiful Pamela Johnson-Freeman and together they run a
successful business in the East Point
community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Lieutenant
Colonel Myron E. Freeman for his many years of courageous and faithful service
and invaluable contributions to this state, congratulate him on a well earned
retirement, and wish him all the best and happiness in the
future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of
the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to Lieutenant Colonel Myron E. Freeman.
