A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Benjamin E. Mays High School Raiders basketball team and inviting the team to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Benjamin E. Mays High School is named for renowned educator and president emeritus of Morehouse College, the late Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, and the Mays High School family continuously strives to follow his exemplary legacy in the education of young minds; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of its principal, Dr. Tyronne M. Smith, Benjamin E. Mays High School is among the outstanding schools in House District 45 and the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the Benjamin E. Mays High School Raiders basketball team won the Class AAAA basketball state championship on March 5, 2004, after defeating Butler High School of Augusta in overtime by the score of 59-53; and

WHEREAS, the team is under the leadership of head coach Floyd Mack, Sr., and assistant coaches Harold Beasley, Leon Carlton, and Michael Harris with the assistance of trainer Takara Clay; and

WHEREAS, Coach Mack has served as head coach for 10 years; and

WHEREAS, the team captains of the 16 member Raiders basketball team are Calvin Booker, Brandon Emerson, and Desmond Williams; and

WHEREAS, the other members of the championship team include DeAndre Bray, Christopher Terry, Brandon Allen, Rashad Chase, Earlando Dunson, Ramon McElrathby, Eric Sharp, Jonathan Murray, Bernard Chatman, Brandon Simmons, Brandon Houston, Kondwani Jefferson, and Michael Warren; and
WHEREAS, the Raiders averaged 20 wins per season for the last four years and were state AAAA runners-up in 2002; and

WHEREAS, the Raiders were 5-AAAA subregion champions and Region 5-AAAA champions in 2003-2004; and

WHEREAS, the Raiders overall record this year was 26-4; and

WHEREAS, along with excelling on the basketball court the Raiders continuously strive to exemplify the Mays High School motto "A Legacy to Keep An Image to Uphold" by maintaining a team average GPA of B.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in academics and as winners of the Class AAAA basketball state championship, head coach Floyd Mack, Sr., assistant coaches Harold Beasley, Leon Carlton, and Michael Harris, and team captains Calvin Booker, Brandon Emerson, and Desmond Williams are honored and invited to appear before the House of Representatives at a time to be determined by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
