House Resolution
1689 By: Representatives Lane of the 101st,
Parrish of the 102nd, Oliver of the 121st, Post 2, Barnard
of the 121st, Post 1, and DeLoach of the 127th
A RESOLUTION
Honoring and remembering the life of Mr. Gordon Alston; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Mr. Gordon Alston was
born in Littleton, North Carolina, on March 11, 1939, to his parents, James and
Willie Alston, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, he attended North
Carolina A & T State University and received a bachelor of science in
biology in 1960 and graduated from the ROTC and entered the United States
military as a 2nd Lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, he
dedicated 28 years of his life to Georgia Southern University having served as
its assistant financial director; and
WHEREAS, Mr.
Alston was the first African American elected to the Bulloch County Board of
Commissioners and served the board faithfully for 20 years;
and
WHEREAS, he served on the board of the Coastal
Georgia Regional Development Center, was a long-standing member of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and a member of the Black
Elected Officials of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, he was
an active parishioner of Brannen Chapel United Methodist Church and an
inspirational member of the
church´s
men´s
chorus; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Alston was a community
leader and advocate of many civic projects and served with distinction all the
citizens of Bulloch County; and
WHEREAS, he is
survived by his beautiful daughter, Ms. Anna Alston, and devoted sons, Sidney
Alston, Courtney Alston, and Andre Alston.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor and remember the life and community service and public service
of Mr. Gordon Alston.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit
an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Gordon Alston.
