A RESOLUTION
In memory and honoring the life of Mr. Rufus Adams; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS, the City of Jackson,
Georgia, has lost one of its most distinguished, respected, and admired citizens
with the passing of Mr. Rufus Adams on January 7, 2004;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Adams was born April 12, 1915, in
Monroe County, Georgia, to his loving parents Benjamin Floyd and Ada Pierson
Adams; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Adams served his country
for ten years as an employee of the United States Department of Agriculture;
and
WHEREAS, in 1946 Mr. Adams and his partner,
Everett Briscoe, founded Adams Briscoe Seed Company located in Jackson and he
and Mr. Briscoe would go on to pair in numerous other business ventures and
become prolific entrepreneurs; and
WHEREAS, he
served his community as a member of the Butts County Board of Education for over
28 years and spent 25 years as its chairperson;
and
WHEREAS, he was chairperson of the Butts County
Hospital Authority for over 18 years, served in various capacities at the
Jackson United Methodist Church, and was a founding director of McIntosh State
Bank; and
WHEREAS, Presidents Kennedy and Carter
each appointed him chairperson of the Georgia Agriculture Stabilization and
Conservation Service State Committee and President Nixon appointed him as one of
five members of the Commodity Credit Corporation;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Adams was the recipient of the
Distinguished Alumni Award from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College, the
Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Seed Association, a Georgia Seed
Association Hall of Fame member, a Butts County Hall of Fame member, was named
the Jackson Business and Professional
Woman´s
Organization´s
first ever Boss of the Year, and the Jackson Kiwanis
Club´s
Man of the Year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body remember and honor
the life and many contributions of Mr. Rufus Adams and express their sincerest
condolences to his family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to
transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Rufus
Adams.
