A RESOLUTION

Commending the World War II Veterans of northeast Georgia, the home front, and their families; to recognize May 24-30, 2004, as Georgia´s "Tribute to Its World War II Generation"; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, America fought World War II from December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946, its official ending date; and it is understood that America´s resources and efforts toward its Allies were ongoing during the 1930s and leading up to Pearl Harbor; and

WHEREAS, Georgia has always provided its best and brightest sons and daughters to serve in our country´s wars and during peace time; and

WHEREAS, Georgia contributed 324,373 of its men and women to serve during World War II; and thus had 6,781 killed in action, 11,650 wounded in action, 652 held as prisoners of war, and 364 still unaccounted for; and

WHEREAS, Georgia dedicated its State World War II Memorial on December 7, 1995, listing 6,781 names of its KIAs and other data, maps, and quotes; and

WHEREAS, Georgians understand that "Freedom Is Not Free" and that all generations have offered themselves to serve in harm´s way, thus embracing John 15:13; and all of this state´s World War II veterans, the home front, and their families are to be highly commended for their service, sacrifice, and devotion to duty during a most trying time in America´s and the world´s history; and

WHEREAS, Georgia has 97,796 living World War II veterans, with their families; and America is going to dedicate its National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 29, 2004; and Georgia, as a state government, made a direct contribution of $324,373; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Veterans Leadership Program desires to ensure that Georgia properly recognizes this generation through enhancing their registration with the memorial, helping them to attend the D.C. ceremony if they wish and can, and helping all of Georgia´s cities, counties, and other entities to recognize them in their local ceremonies; and

WHEREAS, Georgia´s own Commissioner Pete Wheeler, Georgia Department of Veterans Service, has served as chairman of the National World War II Memorial Advisory Board since 1994 and is still currently serving in that capacity.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body highly commend the World War II Veterans of northeast Georgia, the home front, and their families for their outstanding service to Georgia, America, and the world.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we commend the May 29, 2004, dedication of America´s World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Georgia Veterans Leadership Program´s efforts to ensure this "Greatest Generation" is properly recognized.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we designate May 24-30, 2004, as Georgia´s "Tribute to Its World War II Generation"; and encourage all coordinating agencies, organizations, and associations to work together in planning and hosting these events in honor of our World War II veterans.
