House Resolution

A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 25th anniversary of the saving of the Fox
Theatre and commending the City of Atlanta in connection therewith; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS, the Fox Theatre, designed
in the late
1920´s,
is an important architectural, historical, and cultural institution that gives
our city a rich, diverse, vibrant fabric;
and
WHEREAS, the Fox is
Atlanta´s
most popular landmark, rescued by the grassroots efforts of a handful of
businesspersons and 4,000 donors who showed that the Fox is economically viable
and indispensable to Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, the Fox
Theatre is only one of three atmospheric movie palaces left in the United States
and has been designated as a national historic landmark – the highest
national ranking. It has survived The Great Depression, mortgage foreclosure,
bankruptcy, competition, television, and real estate development;
and
WHEREAS, the creation of the Atlanta
Preservation Center originated out of increased citizen concern for
Atlanta´s
important historical structures; and
WHEREAS, the
Atlanta Preservation Center has jointed with 14 preservation partners in a
week-long celebration to showcase
Atlanta´s
architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings,
neighborhoods, and landscapes; and
WHEREAS, this
collective celebration of
Atlanta´s
historic resources begins February 28, 2003, marking the 25th anniversary of the
rescue of the Fox Theatre from demolition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize February 28, 2003, as the 25th anniversary of the saving of
the Fox Theatre and commend the City of Atlanta for observing February 28-March
9, 2003, as the week of "The Phoenix Files: A Citywide Celebration of Living
Landmarks." BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of
the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to the City of Atlanta.
