A RESOLUTION
Commending Honorable James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. and
inviting him to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, Honorable James Earl "Jimmy"
Carter, Jr. served with unparalleled ability as a member of the Senate from 1962
through 1966, as the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1970 through 1974, and as the
39th President of the United States from 1976 through 1980;
and
WHEREAS, this dynamic and powerful public
servant has faithfully represented the citizens of this state and nation with
great distinction, dedication, and ability;
and
WHEREAS, his consistently thorough
consideration of issues and his integrity and reliability have rightfully earned
him the honor, respect, and trust of his colleagues over the years;
and
WHEREAS, he consistently demonstrated a solid
commitment to the careful study of sensitive issues and proposed solutions and
quickly developed a reputation as an equitable, impartial leader whose decisions
were governed by the rules of honesty and fair play;
and
WHEREAS, he exhibited the level of political
activism and unselfish leadership ideally expected of public trustees in an
effective, representative democracy, and his public stewardship has been marked
by unmatched dignity, grace, and wisdom;
and
WHEREAS, his creative leadership and his
thoughtful sensitivity with respect to complex social and political matters, and
especially his ability to work behind the scenes and build coalitions and
consensus, have received the approval and applause of his peers who hold him in
such high regard; and
WHEREAS, on October 11, 2002,
the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced it was awarding The Nobel Peace Prize
for 2002 to Mr. Carter "for his decades of untiring efforts to find peaceful
solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and
to promote economic and social development";
and
WHEREAS, his foresight and forthright
determination have brought unparalleled progress and a sense of destiny to the
citizens of the State of Georgia and the United States and it is abundantly
fitting and proper that the members of this body, most especially those to whom
he so freely imparted advice, encouragement, and friendship and who regard him
with much admiration and respect, pay appropriate tribute to one of their finest
and most distinguished colleagues for the many years of impartial,
well_reasoned, and enlightened service he has rendered on behalf of this state
and its citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body unanimously honor and
commend Honorable James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. for substantially improving the
quality of life for our citizens and contributing to Georgia´s leadership
role in the South; commend him for serving as an unmatched example of
enlightened government and statesmanship; congratulate him upon being named The
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 2002; and wish him every success in all his
future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Honorable James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. is invited to appear before the House
of Representatives on a day and at a time designated by the Speaker of the House
of Representatives.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to Honorable James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr.
