A RESOLUTION

Expressing sympathy at the passing of Coach John "Whack" Hyder; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, John Carl Hyder was born July 10, 1912 in Lula, Georgia; an outstanding athlete in basketball, baseball, cross country, and track, he earned a football scholarship to Georgia Tech because there were no basketball scholarships in those days and became a legend as the head basketball coach from 1951 until he retired on Valentine's Day 1973; and

WHEREAS, Coach "Whack" Hyder won 292 games in 22 seasons at the helm of the Tech program, a total unsurpassed until 1996 under Coach Cremins, and guided Georgia Tech to its first NCAA Tournament in 1960 and to two trips to the National Invitation Tournament; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from Georgia Tech in 1937, he signed a professional baseball contract for three years in the New York Yankees farm system, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and returned in 1946 to his beloved Georgia Tech where he earned a sterling reputation, tamed Kentucky, and was twice named SEC coach of the year; and

WHEREAS, between 1955 and 1964, Hyder's teams beat the fabled coach Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats nine times, an unheard of record against The Baron, and for three years the Jackets beat the 'Cats twice in the same season; and

WHEREAS, Coach Hyder is a member of the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame and was elected to the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1979, and this mild-mannered coach who valued education and respected the individual left an indelible mark on the lives of his players.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body pays tribute to Coach John "Whack" Hyder and conveys sympathy to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Hyder family.
