A RESOLUTION
Expressing regret at the passing of Charles Augustus
Smithgall, Jr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, on
August 19, 2002, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most
distinguished citizens with the tragic passing of Charles Augustus Smithgall,
Jr.; and
WHEREAS, this well-known gentleman from
Hall County was an exemplary citizen who strived for excellence in all his
endeavors and held a position of utmost respect among his fellow business,
religious, and civic leaders in the community and throughout the state;
and
WHEREAS, his extraordinary leadership, keen
vision, remarkable energy, and superb diplomacy matched his commitment to
improve the quality of life for all Georgians;
and
WHEREAS, he initiated bold efforts to
diversify, expand, and strengthen the local economy and provided exceptional
talent organizing, directing, and managing with local leaders the business,
educational, and governmental services spawned by rapid growth;
and
WHEREAS, the generosity and benevolence of this
most prominent businessman benefited not only local civic organizations,
charities, and special projects but also supported major regional and state
ventures to promote the fine arts, conservation, and the environment;
and
WHEREAS, the magnanimity of this distinguished
Georgian and his superb public service created a
profound legacy that will be honored by Georgians for generations to
come.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE
OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body pays tribute to the life of Charles Augustus
Smithgall, Jr. and conveys its deepest sympathy to his beloved
family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of
the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
appropriate copy of this resolution to the Smithgall family.
