House Resolution
419 By: Representatives Greene of the 134th,

A RESOLUTION
Commending Ford Motor Company on its 100th Anniversary; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, on June 16, 2003, Ford
Motor Company will mark its 100th Anniversary as the innovative manufacturer
that made the automobile possible for all Americans; and
WHEREAS, the first commercial automobile was
advertised as the Fordmobile and had a two speed transmission, 28-inch wheels
with wooden spokes, and 3-inch tires; but by 1908 the classic Model T began
production with an industry record of 10,660 cars in the first year and in 1909
a small shop on Ivy Street in Atlanta marked Ford's presence in Georgia;
and
WHEREAS, in 1913 the first moving assembly line
was inaugurated and a new era of industrial progress began that produced more
than 15 million Model T's until 1927; and in 1925 the brilliant Rouge Complex
was completed and encompassed steel mills, paper mills, a glass factory, and a
power plant that allowed for the complete production from raw materials to final
assembly and an industrial icon of the 20th century emerged;
and
WHEREAS, in 1932 the engineering marvel Ford
Model A rolled off the production line and in 1939 came the Mercury with a
distinctive streamlined body style and a V-8 engine
while the United Automobile Workers established a
strong, beneficial relationship with Ford;
and
WHEREAS, under the War Production Board, Ford
produced an extensive array of bombers, tanks, armored cars, gliders, and other
materials for the World War II effort; met the postwar economic boom with a
series of success story models; opened the Atlanta Assembly Plant in Hapeville
on December 10, 1947, and in 2002 its six millionth Ford Taurus was sold as Ford
continues its fine product innovation that yield the best-selling cars, trucks,
and SUV's!
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body commends Ford Motor Company for its
century of wondrous achievements.
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and
directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Ford Motor
Company and to Patricia Reid, manager of the Atlanta Assembly Plant.
