House Resolution 569
By: Representatives Drenner of the 57th, Benfield of the 56th, Post 1, Henson of the 55th, and Mobley of the 58th

A RESOLUTION

Commending BP Amoco, Exxon, and Chevron for requiring signs to be posted on gas pumps prohibiting the use of cell phones during fueling; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, there is world-wide concern that the use of cell phones while fueling at the gas pump is a serious safety hazard that could create a spark that would ignite the gasoline, causing a fire or an explosion; and

WHEREAS, in the interest of public safety and to warn consumers about the potential hazard of fire or explosion, BP Amoco, Exxon, and Chevron have required their petrol stations across the country to post signs on the gas pumps prohibiting the use of cell phones during fueling; and

WHEREAS, the threat to public safety that the use of cell phones while fueling presents is substantiated in the warnings against this practice that have been contained in the manuals of major global cell phone manufacturers such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Motorola for many years; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the concern that these companies have shown for the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of this country be duly recognized.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend BP Amoco, Exxon, and Chevron for their concern for public safety and welfare by requiring their petrol stations to post signs prohibiting the use of cell phones while fueling.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Presidents of BP Amoco, Exxon, and Chevron.
