House Resolution
60 By: Representatives Heath of the 18th,
Westmoreland of the 86th, Keen of the 146th, Cooper of the

A RESOLUTION
Recognizing former Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Honorable Thomas
B. Murphy was born in Bremen, Georgia, on March 10, 1924;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy graduated from Bremen High
School in 1941 and North Georgia College in 1943;
and
WHEREAS, he served with valor and distinction
in the United States Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1946 and upon his return
from military service attended the University of Georgia Law School and
graduated in 1949; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy served
as a member of the Bremen Board of Education from 1948 to 1965, including
service as Chairman from 1960 to 1965; and
WHEREAS,
he served in this Georgia House of Representatives from 1961 until the convening
of the 2003 session, including service as Administration Floor Leader in the
1967-68 term and as Speaker Pro Tem in the 1971-72 and 1973-74 terms;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy was elected Speaker of the
House on December 19, 1973, to fill the unexpired term of the late Geo. L. Smith
II; went on to serve as Speaker through January 12, 2003; and during his
tenure as Speaker was for many years the longest-serving active presiding
officer of any state legislature.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby recognizes
former Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy for his long and outstanding record
of public service.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Clerk of the House is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
this resolution to Mr. Murphy.
