A RESOLUTION

Honoring Dr. Bernard Jackson Bridges; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Bernard Jackson Bridges dedicated his life to the field of medicine and gave exemplary service as a physician to many members of the civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, a native of Nicholasville, Kentucky, he received his bachelor of science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bridges served as a medical officer in the United States Navy; a senior plant physician for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan; interim acting administrator of Southwest Community Hospital in Atlanta; and maintained successful private practices in Detroit and Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, his medical accomplishments included serving as president of the Georgia State Medical Examiners Board for eight years and assistant professor of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, he also wrote about medical and social problems of young African Americans that stem from racism not only in our society, but also racism in the field of medicine; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bridges served on the boards of both the SCLC and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the memory of Dr. Bernard Jackson Bridges for his many contributions to the fields of medicine, civil and human rights.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Bernard Jackson Bridges.
