A RESOLUTION

Commending Bob Callaway; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Bob Callaway was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on January 10, 1933, but soon moved to Americus, Georgia, where he spent his entire youth; and

WHEREAS, he honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and was stationed at Okinawa; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Callaway was production manager of WALB-TV Channel 10 in Albany, where he nobly attempted to supervise Joe Sports, who would later become executive director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and Dawson Mathis, who would serve for ten years as the U.S. Congressman from the 2nd District of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he gave 28 years of public service to the state he so loved, including eight years with Governor George Busbee, 15 years with the Department of Community Affairs, and nearly five years as Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor Mark Taylor; and

WHEREAS, during Mr. Callaway's public service, he oversaw the creation and successful openings of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and was the first director of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon; and

WHEREAS, he successfully produced the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies for 23 consecutive years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Callaway committed himself to helping others through many years of service with the Albany Jaycees (where he was named both Young Man of the Year and Boss of the Year), the Albany Exchange Club, the Georgia Mental Health Association, the Kidney Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and many seasons on a Little League baseball field; and
WHEREAS, he is without question the biggest supporter of the Atlanta Braves this state has ever known; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Callaway achieved his greatest lifetime accomplishment when he married his bride of 47 years, the former Betty Burr, and raised three wonderful children, and he is now the proud grandparent of four granddaughters and three grandsons.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes Bob Callaway for his love of Georgia and dedication to its well-being and wishes him the best that retirement can offer.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Bob Callaway.
