A RESOLUTION

Commending the City of Loganville, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, research to find a cure for breast cancer is a cornerstone of the health and productivity of all Georgians; and

WHEREAS, there is a great need to provide funding for breast cancer research which is recognized by the Breast Cancer Research Stamp; and

WHEREAS, the City of Loganville, a population of 6,500, was recently recognized as the nation´s leader in per capita sales of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp for which postal patrons pay an extra eight cents above the actual cost of the postage with the excess going directly to breast cancer research; and

WHEREAS, residents of the City of Loganville have been working since the spring of 2002 to build community awareness about breast cancer and research through a campaign called "Sign the Contract to Cure Cancer," and since the program´s inception the sale of the stamp has increased more than 1,000 percent in the City of Loganville; and

WHEREAS, this past fall the City of Loganville hosted Ernie Bodai, M.D., the surgeon who spearheaded the national campaign for passage of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, the first stamp in United States history to have its net proceeds earmarked for research; and

WHEREAS, residents of the City of Loganville have significantly contributed to the $31 million which has been raised as of January 2003 in the quest to find a cure for breast cancer.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the City of Loganville and its residents for their dedication and commitment to the well-being of Georgia´s citizens.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the City of Loganville.
