Senate Resolution 63

A RESOLUTION

Expressing sorrow at the tragic loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its crew; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the space shuttle Columbia took flight on January 16, 2003, bearing a brave and dedicated crew; and

WHEREAS, during its mission the crew of the Columbia carried out many new and important scientific endeavors for the betterment of humankind; and

WHEREAS, on February 1, 2003, a disaster occurred which resulted in the destruction of the Columbia and loss of her crew during reentry into the atmosphere; and

WHEREAS, in an age of scientific advancement, the spectacular successes of the space shuttle program may have come to seem routine to many, but the courageous crew of the Columbia knew better than anyone that great missions are not accomplished without great risk; and

WHEREAS, the tragic and untimely passing of these heroic astronauts leaves an unfillable void in the hearts and lives of their families and friends, and it is fitting that the State of Georgia join the nation and the world in paying tribute to the bravery and courage of those space pioneers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express their deepest and most profound sorrow at the tragic loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its crew and extend their most sincere sympathy to the families of Colonel Rick Husband, Commander; Commander William C. McCool, pilot; Lieutenant Colonel Michael Anderson, payload commander; Colonel Ilan Ramon, payload specialist; Captain David Brown, mission specialist; Kalpana Chawla, mission specialist; and Commander Dr. Laurel Clark, mission specialist.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of each above named crew member.
