A RESOLUTION

In memory of and honoring the life and service of U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Bobby Franklin; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia and our nation lost one of its finest fathers, husbands, citizens, and soldiers when Staff Sgt. Bobby Franklin gave his life on August 20, 2003, defending the people of Iraq and his country while fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Franklin was a loving husband to his wife Brenda and doting father to his son, Jacob, and daughter, Holly; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Franklin was attached to the 210th Military Police Company and an 18 year veteran of the North Carolina National Guard, and he was, in peace time, an employee of the state corrections department for 16 years, having last served as a correctional officer at the Carlton H. Colwell Detention Center in Blairsville, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Franklin gave his life as the lead driver of a nighttime Military Police patrol on the streets of Baghdad when an improvised explosive device was detonated by the enemy; and

WHEREAS, for his actions in defense of the Iraqi and American people, Staff Sgt. Bobby Franklin was posthumously awarded the U.S. Army´s Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat at the hands of the enemy and the Bronze Star for his heroic bravery while on patrol; and

WHEREAS, Staff Sgt. Bobby Franklin selflessly gave his life in the service and defense of his country, and his heroism will never be forgotten.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body remembers and honors the life and service of U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Bobby Franklin and expresses to his family sincerest condolences as the rest of the nation and the State of Georgia mourns his loss.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Staff Sergeant Bobby Franklin.
