A RESOLUTION

Commending Coach Mark Richt; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Coach Mark Richt is widely recognized throughout the nation as the personification of excellence in athletics; and

WHEREAS, this highly respected coach is the architect of one of the most successful college football programs in the county, and in just his second season he coached the University of Georgia football team to a school record 13 victories in a single season and attained its first Southeastern Conference title in 20 years; and

WHEREAS, these fabulous Bulldogs finished this historic season as the number three ranked team in the nation, the highest position the university has held since 1980, and resoundingly defeated perennial powerhouse Florida State with a 26-13 Sugar Bowl victory on January 1, 2003, at the spectacular Louisiana Superdome; and

WHEREAS, his role as a coach was to act as an instrument of inspiration and enthusiasm to his players; to create a positive learning environment by encouraging competitive instincts; and to instill the values and positive characteristics of hard work, dedication, and integrity; and

WHEREAS, he is a shining example of the important impact that the efforts of individual coaches make on the quality of athletic training received by the young people of this state, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that his superlative accomplishments be recognized appropriately.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body heartily and gratefully commend Coach Mark Richt for his years of sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of football in Georgia and for the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Coach Mark Richt.
