A
RESOLUTION
Designating
Dooley-Sanford Stadium on the campus of the University of Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Vincent J. Dooley was named head football coach at the University of Georgia
(UGA) in 1963, beginning a legendary and unparalleled tenure at that great
institution, where he served as head coach and athletic director for some 40
years; and
WHEREAS,
over the course of his service at UGA, his foresight and leadership guided the
institution's athletics programs from a university known primarily as a football
school to a program that has achieved an unprecedented level of overall athletic
and academic achievement in all of its sports; and
WHEREAS,
UGA won the college football national championship for the 1980 season under his
direction as head coach, various UGA athletic teams won 18 national
championships during his tenure as athletic director, more than 100 UGA student
athletes from the university were selected as first team Academic All-Americans,
and he was inducted into the College Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS,
it is fitting and proper that he be honored by this state.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the athletic
stadium at the University of Georgia, formerly known as Sanford Stadium and
located within the bounds of Sanford Bridge, Reed Alley, East Campus Road, and
Field Street, is hereby redesignated and shall henceforth be known as
Dooley-Sanford Stadium.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Vincent J.
Dooley, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and the
president of the University of Georgia.
