RESOLUTION
Mourning
the passing of former State Senator Rene Kemp, and honoring his life and memory;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on February 4, 2006, the State of Georgia lost one of its foremost citizens with
the untimely passing of former State Senator Rene Kemp; and
WHEREAS,
this native son was born on July 15, 1935 in Swainsboro, served in the U.S. Army
from 1953 to 1957, and graduated from Georgia Military College and the
University of Georgia, where he earned a law degree; and
WHEREAS,
he enjoyed a long and distinguished career of 18 years in service to the state
in the General Assembly, including three terms as a member of the House of
Representatives from 1977 to 1982 and six terms in the Senate from 1992 to 2004;
and
WHEREAS,
while in the Legislature, he served as a leader in many ways, including chairing
the Judiciary Committee, sponsoring the state's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt
Organizations (RICO) Act, aimed at organized crime and drug trafficking, and
serving as a champion and advocate for issues relating to mental illness;
and
WHEREAS,
the members of the General Assembly knew Senator Kemp as a colleague and a
friend.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express regret at the passing of former State Senator Rene Kemp and
extend condolences to his family and friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
former State Senator Rene Kemp.
