RESOLUTION
Honoring
the 150th anniversary of the founding of Colquitt County, Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
2006 marks the 150th year of the existence of Colquitt County and, on the
occasion of this historical milestone, Colquitt County honors its proud and rich
heritage with a sesquicentennial celebration; and
WHEREAS,
Colquitt County was created on February 25, 1856, by an Act of the Georgia
General Assembly and is named for William T. Colquitt, the great American
orator, state legislator, United States Senator, preacher, militia captain, and
lawyer; and
WHEREAS,
the county was renowned as the home of pine barons because of its many pine
forests and is currently the home of the Sunbelt Exposition, the world's largest
agricultural exposition, the home of United States Senator Saxby Chambliss, and
the beloved home of countless people who have been drawn to this lovely site
because of the wonderful quality of life it provides; and
WHEREAS,
Colquitt County's rolling terrain and fertile soil coupled with its favorable
climate make it one of the richest farming areas in the nation, earning it the
title "Salad Capital of the World" in recognition of its abundant vegetable
crops; and
WHEREAS,
today, Colquitt County remains a vital and important part of Georgia and a
wonderful and welcoming home to many of this
statés
great citizens.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the 150th anniversary of Colquitt County and extend their best
wishes to each and every resident of Colquitt County for many more years of
health and prosperity.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Colquitt
County Board of Commissioners.
