A
RESOLUTION
Commemorating
the 200th anniversary of the founding of the City of Jefferson; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
this year, Jefferson, Georgia, is proudly celebrating its bicentennial
anniversary, marking 200 years of proud heritage; and
WHEREAS,
established on the site of a previous Indian settlement named Thomoccoggan, the
city was designated the county seat of Jackson County on November 24, 1806;
and
WHEREAS,
in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, it was first incorporated as
Jeffersonville, later changed to Jeffersonton before the name was shortened to
its current form on June 30, 1824; and
WHEREAS,
among the city's most famous residents was Dr. Crawford W. Long, who first used
ether as anesthesia for surgery in Jefferson on March 30, 1842; today Jefferson
is home to the Crawford W. Long Museum dedicated to his important medical
legacy; and
WHEREAS,
for several decades, Jefferson thrived as a mill town, but since Jefferson Mills
and Wilkins Industries closed in 1990 and 2001, respectively, the city has
prospered with new industries such as Kubota, Reckitt Benckiser, and World
Technology Ingredients, in addition to companies such as Caterpillar, Seydel,
Mission Foods, Ten Cate Nicholon, Shiloh Industries, Hitachi, and Sumitomo;
and
WHEREAS,
the city is especially proud of its outstanding educational traditions: the
nation's first privately endowed public high school, Martin Institute, was
chartered here in 1818, and today Jefferson City Schools have an extraordinary
track record of academic achievement and have had the state's highest SAT scores
for two years in a row; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Jefferson are very proud of their vibrant history and great
potential for the future, and Georgia has been very blessed to have this
remarkable municipality in its midst for 200 years.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in commemorating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the
City of Jefferson and extend their very best wishes for many more years of
continued prosperity for this very special community.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable
Jim Joiner, Mayor of the City of Jefferson.
