WHEREAS, from 1973 until his retirement in 1986, Mr. Buford W. McRae served with great distinction as county manager of Lowndes County, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as manager, Mr. McRae confronted the challenging questions arising from Lowndes County's explosive development, chief among them being congested traffic and a system of roads that was not fully equipped to handle the growing population; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McRae's guidance and vision led to the building of the Perimeter Road as a long-term solution to these problems; and

WHEREAS, the Perimeter Road was designed as a ring road and major artery by which truck traffic and through-traffic could be diverted around congested areas; and

WHEREAS, this road opened new areas of Valdosta and Lowndes County for development, thus increasing the tax base, a benefit that continues to be enjoyed by current citizens and future generations; and

WHEREAS, throughout planning and building phases of this massive undertaking, Mr. McRae ably worked with the United States Environmental Protection Agency and many civic and business groups to ensure that all concerned parties had a voice in the process; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McRae's leadership, diplomacy, meticulousness, and sensitivity to the many affected parties allowed the largest and most expensive road building project in the history of Valdosta and Lowndes County to be a resounding success, and his direction during this crucial period has resulted in a lasting legacy that is enjoyed by thousands each and every day.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in commending Mr. Buford W. McRae for his outstanding service to Lowndes County and thank him for his many invaluable contributions to Georgia.
